A Gorham man has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for receiving and possessing child pornography, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Carl Loomis, 65, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Nancy Torresen to 17 years in prison followed by 10 years of supervised release. Loomis pleaded guilty on November 30, 2020.

According to court records, investigators with the Gorham Police Department executed a search warrant at Loomis’s residence in Gorham in May 2018. He admitted to investigators that he had child pornography images on his phone and that he had sent images to others using chat sites. Investigators seized several electronic devices from the residence. On one of them, they found chats using a messaging application in which Loomis received child pornography images and videos and discussed his sexual interest in children.

The Gorham Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations investigated the case.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the federal government. Led by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the federal government’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
