Carl Loomis, Receiving and Possessing Child Pornography, Maine 2020

A Gorham man’s disturbing obsession with child pornography has finally been punished, but not before it caused irreparable harm to innocent victims. According to court records, Carl Loomis, 65, was sentenced to 17 years in prison followed by 10 years of supervised release for receiving and possessing child pornography.

U.S. District Judge Nancy Torresen handed down the sentence in U.S. District Court in Portland. Loomis pleaded guilty on November 30, 2020, after investigators with the Gorham Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations uncovered a stash of child pornography on his phone and electronic devices.

In May 2018, the Gorham Police Department executed a search warrant at Loomis’s residence in Gorham. He admitted to investigators that he had child pornography images on his phone and that he had sent images to others using chat sites. Investigators seized several electronic devices from the residence, including one that contained chats using a messaging application in which Loomis received child pornography images and videos and discussed his sexual interest in children.

The disturbing content was discovered during a probe into Loomis’s online activities. According to court records, Loomis received and possessed child pornography images and videos, and even discussed his interest in children on a messaging application. The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Gorham Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations.

This case is a stark reminder of the dangers of child exploitation and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable. Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse, is a positive step forward in the fight against child predators.

As part of Project Safe Childhood, federal, state, and local agencies work together to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims. For more information about Project Safe Childhood, please visit www.justice.gov/psc.
