Carlin Jerrid Montgomery, Possessing a Firearm by a Felon, Louisiana 2018

Abbeville Man Faces Up to 10 Years Behind Bars for Possessing a Firearm by a Felon

LAFAYETTE, La. – In a shocking turn of events, 38-year-old Carlin Jerrid Montgomery of Abbeville, Louisiana, pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm by a convicted felon.

The plea, accepted by U.S. Magistrate Judge Carol Whitehurst, has set the stage for a potentially lengthy prison sentence for Montgomery.

According to court documents, law enforcement agents executed a search warrant at Montgomery’s home on April 28, 2017, and discovered a .45-caliber pistol and ammunition. The handgun was cleverly concealed in the exterior shell of a black metal stereo tuner lying on the floor under Montgomery’s bedroom window.

Montgomery’s guilty plea comes as a result of his prior conviction for possession of crack cocaine on June 11, 2002. As a convicted felon, he is prohibited from possessing a firearm.

Under federal law, Montgomery faces up to 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine. The court has set a sentencing date of September 28, 2018.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer for everyone.

Homeland Security Investigations, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and ATF conducted the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert C. Abendroth prosecuting the case.

As part of Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ efforts to address the rising tide of violent crime in America, the reinvigoration of PSN has been a key priority. Since its launch in 2001, the program has shown significant success in bringing together law enforcement agencies to combat violent crime.
