Ex-NYPD Officer Sentenced to 2 Years for Insurance Scam
A former New York City police officer has been sentenced to two years in prison for his role in a scheme to defraud insurance company GEICO.
CARLOS BECKER, 40, of Hempstead, New York, was sentenced on January 10, 2017 to two years in prison for his role in a conspiracy to commit mail fraud, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York.
Becker was ordered to pay $34,261.19 in restitution to GEICO as part of his sentence.
Becker, who was employed as a police officer with the NYPD at the time of the crime, directed accomplices to set fire to his Range Rover in Queens on September 7, 2012.
He then submitted a fraudulent claim to GEICO, claiming that the car had been stolen and later found burned.
Based on his false claim, GEICO mailed two checks to Becker in the amounts of $29,480.86 and $4,780.33 in January 2013.
Becker pleaded guilty to the charges in September 2012 and was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Margo K. Brodie.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Alexander Solomon and Robert Polemeni.
