BOGALUSA, LA – Carlos Walker, 33, of Bogalusa, Louisiana, is headed to federal prison for nearly eight years after a routine traffic stop exposed a dangerous combination of illegal drugs and a firearm. Walker was sentenced on June 20, 2023, to 87 months’ imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release, after pleading guilty to multiple federal charges.
The case began on September 24, 2021, when Bogalusa Police officers pulled over a black Nissan Altima with a broken headlight. Officers observed Walker, a passenger in the vehicle, attempting to conceal something under the seat. The officers quickly discovered Walker was already wanted on an outstanding warrant. During the search incident to arrest, officers found approximately $4,000 in Walker’s pocket.
But the cash wasn’t the extent of Walker’s illegal stash. A Taurus Model G2C, nine-millimeter handgun, was recovered from under the passenger seat, and 17 grams of methamphetamine were found hidden in the front passenger door pocket. Federal prosecutors didn’t just hit Walker with drug charges; they added the serious charge of possessing a firearm while involved in drug trafficking, significantly increasing his potential sentence.
Walker’s past sealed his fate. Court records show a prior felony drug conviction, making him legally prohibited from possessing a firearm. U.S. District Judge Wendy B. Vitter handed down a combined sentence of 27 months for the possession charges and a consecutive 60 months for the firearm-related offense. The $300 special assessment fee adds insult to injury. Walker pleaded guilty to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Sections 922(g)(1) and 924(a)(2); one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, violating Title 21, United States Code, Sections 841(a)(1) and (b)(1)(C); and one count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 924(c)(1)(A).
The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Bogalusa Police Department, and the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney André Jones of the Narcotics Unit prosecuted the case. U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans highlighted that this case falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through coordinated law enforcement efforts.
PSN, according to the Department of Justice, focuses on fostering community trust, supporting local organizations, prioritizing strategic enforcement, and measuring results. While the program sounds good on paper, the ultimate outcome for Walker is a lengthy prison sentence – a stark reminder that illegal guns and drugs carry severe consequences in the federal system.
