NORTH TROY, VT – Ivan Carmona, 30, of Springfield, Massachusetts, is facing serious federal charges after allegedly brandishing a handgun at a U.S. Border Patrol Agent during a November 2021 pursuit. A federal grand jury in Burlington, Vermont, returned a three-count indictment against Carmona, accusing him of assaulting a Border Patrol Agent with a deadly weapon and possessing a firearm despite a prior felony conviction. He’s currently cooling his heels in jail on state charges.
The incident unfolded November 18, 2021, as law enforcement chased Carmona in connection with an unrelated Vermont warrant. Agents from the Newport, Vermont Border Patrol Station joined state and local cops in the pursuit near North Troy. According to the indictment, Carmona didn’t just run – he had a loaded handgun and reportedly pointed it at one of the pursuing Border Patrol Agents. A dangerous escalation that could have easily turned deadly.
If convicted on all counts, Carmona could be staring down a lifetime behind bars. The minimum sentence is a hefty seven years, but the maximum reaches for life. He’s also facing a potential fine of up to $250,000. This isn’t just about guns; it’s about a repeat offender allegedly threatening a federal officer and putting the community at risk.
The apprehension of Carmona was a multi-agency effort, involving the USBP, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Air & Marine division of Customs and Border Protection, the Orleans County Sheriff’s Department, the Vermont State Police, and the Vermont Drug Task Force. Acting U.S. Attorney Jonathan A. Ophardt praised the seamless collaboration, highlighting the professionalism shown by the Border Patrol Agents who faced down a potentially lethal situation.
“Ivan Carmona’s alleged actions threatening a federal law enforcement officer, combined with his criminal record, suggest he is a danger to the community,” stated James M. Ferguson, Special Agent in Charge of the ATF Boston Field Division. Orleans County Sheriff Jennifer L. Harlow echoed those concerns, lamenting the rising tide of violence in her county. “It has become extremely troubling that Orleans County has become a playground for violence,” she said. “We are so thankful for the wonderful partnership we have with ATF and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.”
Carmona will be assigned legal counsel at his federal arraignment, which will be scheduled by the court. Assistant United States Attorney Matthew Lasher is handling the federal prosecution. Remember, an indictment is simply an accusation, and Carmona is presumed innocent until proven guilty. But the evidence suggests a dangerous individual who allegedly put lives on the line, and the feds are prepared to make their case.
