A New Jersey woman is heading to federal prison after a lengthy investigation and prosecution of a heroin distribution scheme.
Carolyn Spann, 53, of Paterson, New Jersey, was sentenced to two years in prison on her conviction of violating federal drug laws, announced United States Attorney Scott W. Brady.
According to information presented to the court, from 2013 to September 2017, Spann conspired with others to possess with intent to distribute and distribute 100 grams or more of heroin.
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, along with the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office, the Allegheny County Police Department, and the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police. The investigation was funded by the federal Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force Program (OCDETF).
Assistant United States Attorney Cindy K. Chung prosecuted this case on behalf of the government.
The sentence was imposed by United States District Judge Arthur J. Schwab. Spann’s conviction came after a lengthy investigation and prosecution, which ultimately resulted in her being held accountable for her role in the heroin distribution scheme.
With the sentence now finalized, Spann will begin serving her two-year prison term. The case serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat the opioid epidemic and hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
