Armed and in a School Zone: Felon Indicted for Gun Crimes
A previously convicted felon, Carson Moffitt, 40, of Salt Lake County, Utah, has been charged with gun crimes after allegedly discharging an AR-15 style rifle within a school zone.
According to the indictment, Moffitt is restricted from possessing firearms and ammunition due to a prior conviction. However, he allegedly possessed and discharged the AR-15 style rifle near Granite Park Junior High School in South Salt Lake, Utah on April 2, 2025.
South Salt Lake City Police Department officers responded to a call of shots fired at the school at 7:15 p.m. and later discovered AR-15 style shell casings in the middle of the road near the school. Surveillance cameras captured Moffitt’s vehicle, a Subaru WRX, and a Utah Highway Patrol trooper observed the vehicle speeding more than 100 miles per hour.
A high-speed pursuit ensued, with Moffitt reaching speeds of up to 130 miles per hour before exiting Redwood Road and I-215 in Taylorsville. The pursuit was terminated, and a run of the vehicle’s license plate showed that it was registered to Moffitt.
UHP troopers responded to Moffitt’s address and, while attempting to make contact, multiple shots were fired from inside the residence. A witness inside the home advised law enforcement that Moffitt had a rifle, and he eventually opened the garage door and fled in the Subaru.
A Taylorsville City Police Department Officer intercepted and crashed into Moffitt’s Subaru, disabling the vehicle. Moffit was taken into custody, and officers seized an AR-15 style rifle with a drum magazine and ammunition from inside the vehicle.
Moffitt is charged with felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm within a school zone, and discharge of a firearm within a school zone. His initial appearance on the indictment is scheduled for April 17, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. in courtroom 8.4 before a U.S. Magistrate Judge at the Orrin G. Hatch United States District Courthouse in downtown Salt Lake City.
