Catherine Vitello, Selling Fentanyl, New York 2013

BUFFALO, N.Y. – In a shocking case of corruption within the healthcare system, Catherine Vitello, a 42-year-old former nursing supervisor, was sentenced to three years probation, including one year home detention, for selling fentanyl and other painkillers in Buffalo, New York.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Vitello, who was the Director of Nursing at St. Catherine Laboure Health Care Center, sold unused prescription drugs from her office. These drugs were prescribed for patients but were no longer needed, in some cases due to the patient’s death. On at least two separate occasions in October 2013, Vitello sold hydrocodone and fentanyl to a confidential source working with the Drug Enforcement Administration.

As part of the investigation, the DEA, Lackawanna Police Department, Buffalo Police Department, and Erie County Sheriff’s Department worked together to bring Vitello to justice. The case demonstrates the dangers of prescription drug abuse and the importance of holding those in positions of trust accountable for their actions.

U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul stated, ‘As this case demonstrates, high potency and highly dangerous prescription drugs can enter the stream of illegal commerce in a number of ways, including from those in the healing professions.’

Vitello was convicted of possession with intent to distribute and distribution of hydrocodone and fentanyl. Her sentencing is a culmination of the investigation and a reminder that the U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to prosecute those who traffic in lethal substances, regardless of their title or position.

The case is a stark reminder of the dangers of prescription drug abuse and the importance of vigilance in our communities. As we move forward, it is essential that we work together to prevent such crimes from occurring in the future.

In a statement, Assistant U.S. Attorney John M. Alsup said, ‘The defendant’s actions were a betrayal of the public’s trust and a threat to the safety of our community.’

The sentencing of Catherine Vitello serves as a warning to those who would misuse their positions of power for personal gain.
