Cayetano-Ruiz and Brindas-Guzman Indicted in Utah Methamphetamine Bust

Utah – In a stunning blow to drug trafficking rings, Armida Viridiana Cayetano-Ruiz, 32, and Carlos Gerardo Brindas-Guzman, 30, both foreign nationals living in Salt Lake City, have been indicted by a federal grand jury for a staggering drug seizure. Law enforcement officials seized approximately 11,435 grams of methamphetamine and 3,835 grams of heroin from a vehicle they were traveling in.

According to court documents, the duo became part of an FBI-led investigation back in April 2024 after allegations of distributing large quantities of narcotics into Utah. Their arrest came on May 11, 2024, following a traffic stop where a K-9 Officer detected the scent of drugs.

Cayetano-Ruiz and Brindas-Guzman face serious charges: possession of heroin with intent to distribute and possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute. Their court appearance is set for May 30, 2024, at 9:15 a.m., in courtroom 8.4 of the United States District Courthouse in Salt Lake City.

U.S. Attorney Trina A. Higgins announced the charges, emphasizing that this case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program dedicated to reducing violent crime and gun violence.

The investigation was conducted under the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Seth Nielsen. The stringent procedures of OCDETF ensure that even the highest-level criminal organizations are targeted and dismantled.

As an indictment is merely an allegation, Cayetano-Ruiz and Brindas-Guzman are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
