DETROIT – In a shocking turn of events, a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agent has been apprehended for attempting to transfer obscene material to a minor. Harry Marvelle Peless, III, 51, from Newport, Michigan, faces serious charges after being arrested by FBI agents.
According to United States Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon, Jr., Peless solicited sex and exchanged explicit material with an undercover officer posing as a 13-year-old girl online. The offense was carried out using an online messaging application, with the communications taking place almost daily since September 2024.
Investigative evidence revealed that Peless accessed his chat account while on duty, underscoring his flagrant disregard for his position and responsibilities as a Border Patrol Agent. Gorgon emphasized that a criminal complaint is merely a formal charge and does not prove guilt; every defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
The investigation into this disturbing case is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Customs and Border Protection – Office of Professional Responsibility, and Department of Homeland Security – Office of Inspector General. Assistant U.S. Attorney Eaton Brown will be handling the prosecution.
