Cecilio Galan, Child Pornography Possession and Distribution, Oregon 2014

Cecilio Galan, 45, of Metolius, Oregon, has been sentenced to 63 months in prison for his involvement in a disturbing child pornography case. The sentencing occurred on April 17, 2014, after a thorough investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the investigation, Galan possessed child pornography he found on the internet and then made it available to others on a file-sharing site. His intentions were to obtain additional child pornography in return. This disturbing behavior occurred while he was serving as a custodian in a local school and after having previously worked as a reserve police officer and a bus driver.

Fortunately, the investigation did not reveal any evidence that Galan had any inappropriate contact with the students at the school where he worked. However, his actions are a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance in protecting our children from the scourge of child exploitation.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Amy Potter, who ensured that justice was served. This case is a testament to the dedication of law enforcement agencies and prosecutors in combating the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by the United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims.

Galan will also serve 5 years of supervised release after his prison term. This sentence serves as a warning to those who would seek to exploit and harm our children. The law will not tolerate such behavior, and those who engage in it will be held accountable.

The investigation and prosecution of this case demonstrate the commitment of law enforcement and the justice system to protecting our children from the horrors of child pornography and exploitation.
