GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: Larry Joe Hanson, Sr., a 58-year-old man from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has been sentenced to six months in federal prison for his brazen theft of $78,734 in Social Security disability benefits. Hanson had been receiving the funds under false pretenses for nearly four years, while secretly working at a local company.
Hanson first claimed he was unable to work, thereby qualifying him for the disability payments. Yet, during this time, he was earning wages at a Cedar Rapids firm. The deception was further compounded when Hanson falsely reported his earnings as tool rentals from the company, rather than salary income. Later, he convinced his employer to transfer his earnings to his wife’s name under the guise of wanting to work but unable to be paid directly.
United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams imposed the sentence in Cedar Rapids. In addition to serving six months’ imprisonment, Hanson was ordered to pay $78,509.40 in restitution to the Social Security Administration. He will also serve a three-year term of supervised release following his prison term.
Hanson’s case was handled by Assistant United States Attorneys Jacob Schunk and Anthony Morfitt, with investigation support from the Social Security Administration – Office of the Inspector General.
