Birmingham Man Indicted for Bank Heist in Alabama
BIRMINGHAM, AL – In a brazen daylight robbery, 18-year-old CEDRICK LAMAR COLLINS allegedly took hostages at an Alabama Credit Union in Tuscaloosa.
According to the indictment, Collins forcibly made 11 people accompany him without their consent, leaving the credit union’s employees shaken. The indictment also alleges that Collins took the employees hostage in an attempt to evade capture, ordering the police and FBI to stand down in exchange for their release.
Fortunately, police were able to apprehend Collins at the scene, releasing all the hostages unharmed. However, the incident has left the community reeling, raising questions about Collins’ motives and the severity of his crimes.
The indictment charges Collins with three counts: bank robbery, hostage-taking while attempting to flee, and hostage-taking to force a government action. If convicted, Collins faces up to 20 years in prison for bank robbery, a minimum 10-year sentence for taking a hostage while fleeing, and potentially life in prison for taking hostages to force a government action.
The FBI, in conjunction with the Tuscaloosa and University of Alabama police departments, and the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Brad Felton will be prosecuting the case.
An indictment contains only charges, and Collins is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
The people of Tuscaloosa are relieved that the hostages were released unharmed, but the incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of violent crime and the importance of community vigilance.
