A delivery truck driver from Glenburn, Maine, has been sentenced for stealing a package belonging to the Veterans Administration.
According to court records, Chad Bitgood, 38, stole a package from United Parcel Service on April 27, 2015. The package was being monitored by VA investigators and contained narcotic medications that Bitgood believed he could consume.
When confronted by investigators, Bitgood admitted to stealing the package with the intention of possessing the narcotics inside.
The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Veterans Administration, Office of the Inspector General.
On January 26, 2016, Bitgood pled guilty to the theft of government property and attempted possession of a controlled substance.
On January 26, 2016, Bitgood was sentenced to two years of probation and ordered to pay a fine of $1000.
Bitgood was employed by United Parcel Service at the time of the crime, and the incident highlights the risks of package theft and the importance of monitoring shipments.
