A Willmar man has been sentenced for his role in a large cache of illegal firearms and explosives found in the city.
Chad Lee Monson, 46, was sentenced to 36 months in prison on May 25, 2018, after pleading guilty to charges of possessing machine guns, pipe bombs, and silencers.
According to court documents, law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at Monson’s residence on January 30, 2018, and found personal use amounts of narcotics, 16 firearms, and a large quantity of ammunition.
Two additional search warrants were executed on February 21, 2018, at a commercial utility building near Monson’s residence, where officers found 10 machine guns, two of which had obliterated serial numbers, three pipe bombs, and three unregistered silencers.
Monson was required to forfeit 12 firearms, three pipe bombs, and three silencers as part of his plea agreement.
United States Attorney Erica H. MacDonald thanked the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the CEE-VI Gang and Drug Task Force, and the Kandiyohi County Attorney’s Office for their work on the case.
Monson was convicted of one count of possession of a machine gun, one count of possession of an unregistered destructive device (pipe bomb), and one count of possession of an unregistered silencer.
He was sentenced to 36 months in prison followed by 3 years of supervised release.
