MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – In a brazen act of violence, Cedric Lamont Berry, Jr., 24, of Minneapolis, was sentenced to 71 months in federal prison for his role in a 2017 bar shooting.
According to the investigation, on November 23, 2017, Berry and his co-defendant, Cortez Maurice Crumble, a/k/a ‘Bruiser,’ 30, were at the Broadway Pub in Minneapolis when a fight broke out inside the bar. Security personnel intervened, but the situation escalated when Berry retrieved a firearm from a vehicle in the parking lot and fired at a vehicle as it sped out of the lot.
Video footage captured the chaos, showing Berry and Crumble shooting at the fleeing vehicle. Law enforcement officers found 20 .40 caliber discharged cartridge casings at the scene.
Berry pleaded guilty to one count of felon in possession of ammunition on July 19, 2018. His co-defendant, Crumble, was recently found guilty and is set to be sentenced on March 21, 2019.
United States Attorney Erica H. MacDonald stated, ‘The defendant has a violent criminal history and has consistently been shown to be a danger to the community.’ She added, ‘My commitment to Minnesotans is to use every tool and law enforcement partnership we have to keep our communities safe.’
ATF Special Agent in Charge Kurt Thielhorn praised the successful investigation, saying, ‘These individuals repeatedly disregarded both the law and the safety of others.’ He added, ‘We’re glad to get them out of the community they victimized.’
This case is a result of an investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Minneapolis Police Department, and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Calhoun-Lopez tried the case.
Berry’s sentence includes 71 months in prison and 3 years of supervised release. His co-defendant, Crumble, awaits sentencing on March 21, 2019.
