A Minneapolis man has been charged in a federal indictment for illegal possession of a firearm, announced U.S. Attorney Andrew M. Luger. Muhnee Jaleel Bailey, 23, was taken into custody after a foot chase with officers from the Minneapolis Police Department.
According to court documents, on November 17, 2022, officers observed Bailey step out of his vehicle and enter an Auto Zone store in Minneapolis. Officers could see, in plain view, an extended magazine of a firearm sticking out from under the driver’s seat of Bailey’s vehicle. Officers approached Bailey when he came out of the Auto Zone store and Bailey began to flee on foot.
Bailey eventually stopped running and officers apprehended him. Officers later searched Bailey’s vehicle and recovered a Glock, Model 30, .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol. Because Bailey has prior felony convictions in Ramsey County, including drive-by shooting and possession of a machinegun, he is prohibited under federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition at any time.
The indictment charges Bailey with one count of possession of a firearm as felon. This case is the result of an investigation conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Minneapolis Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney David P. Steinkamp is prosecuting the case.
An indictment is merely an allegation and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The charges against Bailey are serious and carry significant penalties if convicted. The case against Bailey is a reminder of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat gun violence and keep communities safe.
The investigation and prosecution of Bailey’s case demonstrate the commitment of federal and local authorities to enforcing federal firearms laws and holding individuals accountable for their actions. As the case against Bailey moves forward, it will be important to follow the developments and see how the justice system holds him accountable for his alleged crimes.
