Newport News, VA – A brutal act of violence shook a Newport News community in 2010, leaving one man dead and another to face the music for their role in the heinous crime. Chadrick Lard, 26, of Newport News, was sentenced to 25 years in prison followed by five years of supervised release for his part in a 2010 robbery that ended with a murder.

According to court documents, Lard was an associate of the Black P-Stones gang in Newport News. As part of a gang initiation, Lard and three others went to a home in Newport News with the intention of robbing its occupant of drugs and money. During the course of the robbery, one of Lard’s associates forced the occupant of the home to the ground and shot him in the head, killing him.

Following the murder, Lard and his associates fled the scene and divided the proceeds of the robbery. The leader of the Black P-Stones, Michael Hopson, was convicted of racketeering charges including two murders and four attempted murders on December 5, 2016. Hopson is scheduled to be sentenced on March 10.

The case was a result of an extensive investigation by the FBI’s Norfolk Field Office. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, led by Dana J. Boente, worked closely with the FBI to bring justice to the victim’s family.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric M. Hurt and Trial Attorney Marianne Shelvey of the Organized Crime and Gang Section are prosecuting the case. U.S. District Judge Arenda Wright Allen presided over the sentencing hearing.

The 25-year sentence handed down to Lard is a significant blow to the Black P-Stones gang and a testament to the dedication of law enforcement agencies in the Eastern District of Virginia.

As the people of Newport News continue to heal from the wounds of the past, they can take comfort in knowing that those responsible for the crime are facing justice.
