OWENSBORO, Ky. – In a harsh blow to the illegal drug trade, Skyler Dean Prahl, 32, of Champaign, Illinois, was today sentenced in United States District Court by Chief Judge Joseph H. McKinley to one year in prison, $950 restitution, and a $5,000 fine for his role in distributing over 80,000 homemade Tramadol capsules.
Prahl faced charges including distribution of a Schedule IV controlled substance, introduction of misbranded drugs, and wire fraud. The sentence carries no parole in the federal system.
According to the plea agreement, Prahl imported Tramadol powder from overseas and used an encapsulating machine to produce the illicit capsules. For years, he operated an online business selling these substances nationwide without verifying customer prescriptions.
Prahl’s scheme came to light when he admitted distributing Tramadol to an undercover agent on August 31, 2015. He also confessed to shipping misbranded Tramadol from Illinois to Kentucky, lacking proper labeling and directions for use. Additionally, Prahl was found guilty of a wire fraud scheme where he promised to deliver 3,000 Tramadol capsules but failed to do so after receiving payment.
Assistant United States Attorney David R. Weiser prosecuted the case, with investigations led by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration – Office of Criminal Investigation (Owensboro), the United States Postal Inspection Service (Evansville), DEA Diversion (Springfield), and the Kentucky State Police, DESI-East.
The sentence underscores the serious consequences for those involved in illegal drug distribution and wire fraud, sending a clear message that such activities will not be tolerated by law enforcement.
