A federal jury has delivered a guilty verdict against Malaia A. Turner, 35, of Champaign, Illinois, for her role in a methamphetamine conspiracy that spanned the Central District of Illinois.
Turner was found guilty of conspiracy to distribute more than 500 grams of a mixture or substance containing methamphetamine. The verdict was handed down on May 3, 2024, after four days of testimony presented by the government.
The evidence presented during the trial established that Turner conspired with several others to obtain large quantities of methamphetamine ice from suppliers in Illinois and California. These suppliers would then transport the drugs to the Central District of Illinois, where Turner and her co-conspirators would distribute them to others for a profit.
Turner’s operation allegedly reached as far as Champaign, Coles, and Edgar Counties, where she and her associates sold the methamphetamine ice to customers. The investigation, which was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Illinois State Police’s East Central Illinois Task Force, and the United States Postal Inspection Service, uncovered a vast network of methamphetamine distribution.
Turner has been in custody since her arrest in August 2022. She now faces a potential sentence of ten years imprisonment up to life imprisonment, a fine of not more than $10 million, and a minimum of five years supervised release upon her release from custody.
The case is part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) operation. OCDETF uses a multi-agency approach, leveraging the strengths of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to dismantle transnational criminal organizations and disrupt the flow of illicit substances.
Assistant United States Attorneys Rachel E. Ritzer and Timothy J. Sullivan represented the government at trial. The investigation’s findings serve as a reminder of the ongoing struggle against organized crime and the importance of law enforcement collaboration in combating the illicit drug trade.
The sentencing for Turner has been scheduled for September 23, 2024, at 1:30 p.m. at the U.S. Courthouse in Urbana, Illinois.
