San Antonio authorities have made a significant arrest in their ongoing effort to combat violent crime in the city. Charles Lee Bethany, a 36-year-old man, was taken into custody on July 26, 2017 for possessing with intent to distribute 28 grams or more of cocaine base.
The arrest was made after a joint investigation by the FBI and the San Antonio Police Department. The investigation, which began with a search of Bethany’s residence in the 600 block of J Street, resulted in the seizure of approximately 56 grams of cocaine powder and 56 grams of crack cocaine on July 21, 2017.
Bethany’s arrest is part of a larger effort by local and federal authorities to end the senseless shootings that have plagued San Antonio. The investigation into the July 19, 2017 drive-by shooting in the 400 block of Spriggsdale and the subsequent shooting on Hub Street, in which a 4-year-old boy was killed, continues.
According to the affidavit, surveillance video suggests that Bethany may have been the intended target of the drive-by shooting. The video shows a number of individuals appearing to be in possession of a pistol and a rifle leaving the location on J Street about 12 minutes before the shooting on Hub Street.
Bethany is currently being held in federal custody and is scheduled to appear in court on August 1, 2017 for a detention hearing. Upon conviction, he faces between 5 and 40 years in federal prison.
The investigation into Bethany’s activities is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information about the case or other acts of violence to contact the SAPD or the FBI.
It is worth noting that a criminal complaint is merely a charge and should not be considered as evidence of guilt. The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
