John Edward Willroth, Methamphetamine Distribution Conspiracy, IA 2019

A 54-year-old Charter Oak, Iowa man is headed to federal prison after admitting to a multi-year methamphetamine distribution conspiracy that flooded the region with over 1.5 kilograms of the potent drug. John Edward Willroth was sentenced on May 16, 2019, to 144 months — 12 years — behind bars for his role in the operation.

Willroth pleaded guilty to one count of conspiring to distribute methamphetamine and one count of actual distribution, charges stemming from activities between 2016 and March 2018. At the plea hearing, he admitted to participating in a network that trafficked at least 1.5 kilograms of meth. On three separate occasions in 2016 and 2017, Willroth personally distributed approximately 30 grams of pure methamphetamine, court records show.

The sentencing, handed down by U.S. District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand in Sioux City, includes an additional eight-year term of supervised release post-incarceration. With no parole in the federal system, Willroth will serve every mandated month. He remains in U.S. Marshals custody pending transfer to a federal correctional facility.

This conviction marks a grim milestone for Willroth, who has a criminal history steeped in drug offenses. He was previously convicted of five felony drug charges in Iowa — a record that likely influenced the severity of the sentence. Prosecutors emphasized his repeated refusal to disengage from the drug trade despite prior interventions.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Shawn S. Wehde and built by the Tri-State Drug Task Force, a multi-agency coalition that includes the DEA, Homeland Security Investigations, Sioux City Police, Woodbury County Sheriff’s Office, Nebraska State Patrol, South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, Iowa National Guard, Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, U.S. Marshals Service, and the Woodbury County Attorney’s Office.
