Kevin Babb, Methamphetamine Distribution, Iowa 2016

Kevin Babb, 55, of Sioux City, Iowa, was sentenced to 150 months in federal prison on January 6, 2017, for his role in a multi-year methamphetamine distribution conspiracy that flooded neighborhoods with pure crystal meth.

Convicted by a jury on October 7, 2016, Babb was found guilty of one count of conspiracy to distribute 50 grams or more of actual methamphetamine and three separate counts of distribution. The charges stem from a coordinated drug ring that operated across the Sioux City area from 2012 through 2014, feeding addiction and fueling street-level violence.

Trial evidence revealed Babb handed off meth during three controlled buys with law enforcement in April and July 2014. Each transaction was recorded, placing him directly at the heart of the operation as both a supplier and distributor. The purity and volume of the drug involved triggered mandatory minimum sentencing guidelines.

U.S. District Judge Leonard T. Strand handed down the sentence in Sioux City, ordering 150 months behind bars, a $400 special assessment, and a mandatory 5-year term of supervised release after incarceration. Federal parole has been abolished, meaning Babb will serve at least 85% of his sentence before release.

Babb is currently in U.S. Marshals custody, awaiting transfer to a federal correctional facility. Authorities say his network relied on cross-state coordination, using connections in Nebraska and South Dakota to move product and avoid detection.

The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Nathan W. Nelson and U.S. Attorney Jack Lammers. The Tri-State Drug Task Force, a joint operation including DEA, Homeland Security Investigations, Sioux City Police, and multiple state and local agencies, led the investigation. Court records are available under case number 16-4041 at the Northern District of Iowa’s electronic filing system. Follow updates via @USAO_NDIA.
