Chasen James Kipp, Involuntary Manslaughter, Montana 2023

GREAT FALLS – A devastating crash on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation has sent a Browning man to prison. Chasen James Kipp, 25, was sentenced to 16 months in prison to be followed by 3 years of supervised release, according to U.S. Attorney Kurt Alme.

The fatal crash occurred on October 21, 2023, when Kipp, driving his 2022 Dodge Charger, crossed the center lane of traffic and collided with a sedan, killing the driver, Jane Doe. The Montana Highway Patrol conducted the crash investigation and determined Kipp was going 82 mph in a 65-mph zone when he crossed the center line and struck Doe’s vehicle.

Law enforcement officers arrived at the scene to find Kipp trying to flee. An officer described Kipp staggering and could smell alcohol on him. The officers detained Kipp, who said he had consumed two mixed drinks at the Pioneer Bar in Cut Bank and was returning to his home in Birch Creek. Kipp was arrested and consented to a blood draw, where he told the medical provider he was too drunk to remember the crash and he “came to” when the airbags deployed.

Paramedics pronounced Jane Doe dead at the scene. She died from blunt force trauma sustained from the crash. The toxicology report showed Kipp’s blood alcohol content was .114 and he had cocaine in his system.

Kipp pleaded guilty in December 2024 to involuntary manslaughter. Chief U.S. District Judge Brian M. Morris presided over the case. The U.S. Attorney’s Office prosecuted the case, with the investigation conducted by the FBI, Blackfeet Law Enforcement Services, the Cut Bank Police Department, the Glacier County Sheriff’s Office, and the Montana Highway Patrol.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities. The program brings together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to make neighborhoods safer for everyone.

Chasen James Kipp, 25, of Browning, will serve 16 months in prison followed by 3 years of supervised release for his role in the fatal DUI crash on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. The community is left to mourn the loss of Jane Doe, whose life was tragically cut short in the devastating crash.
