NEW ORLEANS – A shocking case of postal money order tampering has unfolded in Slidell, Louisiana, with a local woman pleading guilty to conspiracy. Chasity Dotey, also known as Chasity Pines, a 27-year-old resident of Slidell, Louisiana, has admitted to her role in altering two U.S. Postal Money Orders.
According to court records, Dotey cashed two altered U.S. Postal Money Orders, each valued at $530.00, at a U.S. Post Office in Slidell, Louisiana. The two money orders had been purchased in California for minimal value and then altered to reflect a higher amount by unknown co-conspirators.
The case was investigated by the United States Postal Inspection Service, which has been praised by U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans for their diligent work in bringing the perpetrators to justice. Assistant U.S. Attorney Edward J. Rivera is leading the prosecution.
Dotey’s guilty plea has significant consequences, as she now faces up to five years in prison, up to $250,000 in fines, and up to three years of supervised release. In addition, she will be required to pay a $100 mandatory special assessment following her conviction.
The sentencing hearing for Dotey is scheduled to take place on October 21, 2021, at which time the court will determine her final sentence.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of postal security and the severe consequences that come with tampering with postal money orders. As the investigation continues, authorities will be working tirelessly to identify and bring to justice all those involved in this conspiracy.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney Evans commended the United States Postal Inspection Service for their dedication to upholding the law and protecting the public from financial crimes.
