A Texas federal court has dealt a crushing blow to the state’s methamphetamine trade with the conviction of 35-year-old Dallas resident, Marcus Chatman, for leading a $1.8 million methamphetamine distribution ring.
According to court documents, Chatman, a former Dallas resident, was at the helm of a sophisticated operation that transported and distributed massive quantities of methamphetamine throughout the region.
The case, United States v. Chatman, was heard in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas, with the jury returning a guilty verdict on all counts of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.
The evidence presented during the trial revealed that Chatman’s operation spanned several years, with the defendant using various methods to evade law enforcement, including encrypted communication and money laundering.
Chatman’s conviction carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, and the court has scheduled a sentencing hearing for April 15, 2024. The defendant is currently being held in a local federal detention center pending sentencing.
Prosecutors hailed the conviction as a significant victory in the ongoing fight against methamphetamine trafficking in the region, stating that Chatman’s operation had a profound impact on the community, contributing to the spread of addiction and violence.
Attorneys for the defense declined to comment on the case, citing the ongoing legal proceedings.
