Joseph Kurowski, 23, of Cheektowaga, NY, pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography, a crime that carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine. The guilty plea was entered before U.S. District Judge Lawrence J. Vilardo in Buffalo, marking a grim milestone in a case rooted in digital exploitation of a minor.
Kurowski admitted to initiating sexually explicit text message conversations in the spring of 2015 with a 17-year-old girl. On April 10, 2015, he directly requested that she send a sexually explicit photograph, which she did via text. At the time, Kurowski was fully aware she was under the age of 18, making the receipt of the image a federal crime.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron J. Mango, who laid out the timeline and digital evidence linking Kurowski to the illegal possession of child pornography. The charge stems not only from the receipt of the image but from the deliberate solicitation of explicit content from a known minor.
Law enforcement officials say the investigation was a coordinated effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation, under Special Agent-In-Charge Adam S. Cohen, and the Blasdell Police Department, led by Lieutenant Joseph Gramaglia. Digital forensics played a critical role in tracing the texts and confirming Kurowski’s identity and intent.
Kurowski now faces the full weight of federal sentencing guidelines. His prior criminal history, if any, and the nature of the material involved will be scrutinized ahead of his scheduled sentencing date of March 7, 2017, at 9:00 a.m. before Judge Vilardo.
