GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE – In a sweeping operation that shattered a local drug enterprise, federal agents have arrested seven individuals in Cherokee County, Texas. The Department of Justice’s Office of Public Affairs announced the seizure of over 100 grams of methamphetamine and ten firearms during the bust.
The arrests followed a lengthy investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, and the Jacksonville Police Department, with assistance from the Rusk Police Department. The defendants, all residents of Cherokee County, are facing multiple federal drug and firearms violations.
Named in the indictment are Eric Scott Smart (30), Steven Ray Davis (42), Michael Wayne Christopher (52), Jimmy Royce Stafford (28), Karl Dwayne Underwood (23), Jimmy Chance Guillen (23), and Darren Michael Massey (20). Each faces a decade-long sentence if convicted on drug charges, with fines reaching up to $5 million. Weapons charges could add additional prison time.
The suspects are currently being held without bond following their initial appearances before U.S. Magistrate Judge Nicole Mitchell in Tyler, Texas, on March 11, 2014. Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard L. Moore is handling the prosecution.
It’s important to note that an indictment merely charges a crime and does not indicate guilt or innocence.
This operation sends a clear message to drug traffickers in Cherokee County: their reign of terror is over, and justice has been served.
