SPRINGFIELD, MO – Chet Edwin Mercer, 35, of Carl Junction, Missouri, will spend the next decade behind bars after being sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for trafficking methamphetamine and illegally possessing a firearm. U.S. District Judge M. Douglas Harpool handed down the sentence on February 29th, a stiff penalty reflecting the scope of Mercer’s operation.
The case, built on a combination of undercover work and a subsequent raid, revealed a significant drug distribution network. According to court documents, Mercer admitted to possessing 106 grams of methamphetamine during a controlled purchase conducted by law enforcement on November 19, 2021, directly at his Carl Junction home. Less than two weeks later, on November 30, 2021, a search warrant executed at Mercer’s property uncovered a staggering 363 grams of nearly pure (97%) methamphetamine hidden inside a camper parked in his two-bay garage.
But the drugs weren’t the only illegal items found. Officers also discovered a Springfield Armory 9mm handgun on the bed inside the camper, along with drug paraphernalia. Mercer pleaded guilty to one count of possessing methamphetamine with the intent to distribute and one count of possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug-trafficking crime. The feds weren’t buying his story, and the evidence painted a clear picture of a dedicated criminal.
Investigators determined Mercer wasn’t a newcomer to the game. He’d been running this operation since 2013, cleverly using his legitimate dump truck business as a front to transport drugs. He regularly made trips to Oklahoma City to pick up “multiple pounds” of methamphetamine, which were then loaded into duffle bags and concealed within his truck. Prosecutors were able to establish that Mercer distributed at least 10 kilograms of the deadly drug over the years.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jessica R. Eatmon led the prosecution, supported by a multi-agency investigation involving the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Ozarks Drug Enforcement Team. This case was part of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) program, a federal initiative aimed at dismantling major criminal organizations. The OCDETF focuses on intelligence-driven, prosecutor-led, multi-agency investigations to target the highest levels of drug trafficking.
Mercer’s 12-year sentence is without the possibility of parole. He’ll have plenty of time to reflect on his choices – and the consequences – while locked away. This conviction serves as a warning to others operating in the shadows: federal agencies are working relentlessly to dismantle drug trafficking networks and bring offenders to justice.
