CHICAGO – Dwight Hasberry, 32, is headed to federal prison for 15 years after being convicted as part of a ruthless carjacking and robbery crew that terrorized Chicago in the late hours of September 28th and 29th, 2022. The sentencing, handed down by U.S. District Judge Manish Shah on July 10, 2025, brings a measure of closure to a case marked by brazen violence and callous disregard for human life.
Hasberry, along with co-defendants Damandre Henley, Tyler Oates-Nelson, and Dvario McDowell, all of Chicago, systematically targeted victims, culminating in a particularly chilling incident where a Volkswagen Tiguan was carjacked with an infant strapped into a rear car seat. Henley, Hasberry, and McDowell allegedly brandished firearms at the driver and the child, ordering them out of the vehicle before speeding away. The driver managed to remove the infant before the vehicle was stolen.
The crew didn’t stop at the carjacking. Shortly after, they moved onto the Ravenswood Manor neighborhood, where they robbed two victims at gunpoint – one of their cell phone, wallet, and keys, the other of a backpack. Their rampage continued with a brazen hold-up of a 7-Eleven convenience store. While Oates-Nelson waited in the stolen SUV, Henley, McDowell, and Hasberry stormed the store, armed and dangerous. According to court documents, Henley violently struck a store clerk in the head with his firearm, forcing them to open the cash register.
The crew then fled with cash, cigarettes, and bottles of liquor, leaving behind a scene of fear and trauma. Assistant U.S. Attorney Elie Zenner, in a pre-sentencing memorandum, didn’t mince words, stating that the defendants’ actions “terrorized innocent Chicagoans and showed a complete disregard for human life, for societal norms, and for the law.” Zenner further highlighted the ripple effects of such crimes, noting how they “scare away businesses and ruin neighborhoods.”
This sentencing follows similar convictions for the other members of the crew. Judge Shah previously sentenced Henley, Oates-Nelson, and McDowell to prison terms ranging from 15 to 22 years. The coordinated effort to bring these criminals to justice was a joint operation led by United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, Andrew S. Boutros, FBI Special Agent-in-Charge Douglas S. DePodesta, and Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling.
All four defendants have been in law enforcement custody since 2022, awaiting their fates. While 15 years is a significant sentence for Hasberry, it remains to be seen if it will deter others from engaging in similar acts of violence.
