CHICAGO – Darren D. Walton, 31, of Midlothian, Illinois, will spend the next two years in a federal prison cell after being sentenced Wednesday for a chilling campaign of threats against Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) employees and local police. Walton’s outburst stemmed from a rejected application for disaster assistance following alleged flood damage to his vehicle in 2023, escalating into explicit promises of violence.
According to federal prosecutors, Walton bombarded FEMA with over 100 phone calls, each laced with increasingly menacing language. The calls weren’t about seeking aid; they were declarations of intent to harm. In one particularly disturbing exchange, Walton reportedly told a FEMA employee, “Y’all better stop [expletive] playing with me, bro. Before there be a mass shooting in a little bit, bro. Real talk. And I’ll smile in court on camera on the news, letting ‘em knowing I killed them [expletive] ‘cause you was playing with me, bro.”
The situation spiraled further when FEMA alerted the Midlothian Police Department, who conducted a welfare check at Walton’s residence. Instead of de-escalating, Walton’s threats shifted to include the officers themselves. The day after the police visit, he allegedly called FEMA again, stating, “Send ‘em again. And I’ll kill the [expletive]. Tell them I kill they [expletive] this time. I’m ready to kill. And I’m going to kill. And I’m gonna make sure I kill. I’m going to kill a good four, five officers before the police even take me out the [expletive], guaranteed.”
Walton ultimately pleaded guilty to a federal charge of transmitting a threat in interstate commerce. U.S. District Judge Steven C. Seeger handed down the two-year sentence during Wednesday’s hearing. Assistant U.S. Attorney Adam Rosenbloom argued forcefully for a significant penalty, emphasizing the terror Walton inflicted on public servants simply doing their jobs. “The FEMA employees who received the calls were public servants doing their job. They did not deserve to be exposed to the terrifying threats contained in defendant’s calls,” Rosenbloom stated in a sentencing memorandum.
The investigation was spearheaded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security / Federal Protective Service-Region 5, with crucial support from the Midlothian Police Department. U.S. Attorney Andrew S. Boutros for the Northern District of Illinois announced the sentencing, signaling a zero-tolerance policy for threats against federal employees and law enforcement. This case serves as a stark reminder that idle threats carry serious consequences, especially when directed at those dedicated to public service.
Walton’s case highlights the growing trend of individuals lashing out at government agencies and personnel, often fueled by frustration or perceived injustice.
