DAVENPORT, Iowa — Nicolas Oneal Garrett, 35, a notorious Chicago gun runner, was locked up for 96 months in federal prison after being caught with a firearm he stole from an ex-girlfriend’s home. The sentence was handed down on June 27, 2024.
Garrett was nabbed by the Iowa City Police Department during a bus ride to Iowa City. He was found in possession of a stolen firearm and immediately arrested. His previous rap sheet includes multiple felony convictions and a domestic violence misdemeanor, making him legally barred from owning guns.
The judge also ordered Garrett to serve three years of supervised release following his prison term. Parole is not an option in the federal system.
United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa announced the sentence. The Iowa City Police Department was instrumental in investigating and apprehending Garrett.
