BANGOR, Maine – Another Maine criminal caught red-handed with an illegal weapon. Jason Levasseur, 48, of Carroll Plantation, is headed back to the system after receiving a 15-month sentence in U.S. District Court in Bangor for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. Chief U.S. District Judge Lance E. Walker handed down the sentence, to be followed by three years of supervised release, proving yet again that some individuals never learn.
The trouble began in November 2022 when a sharp-eyed Maine State Police trooper spotted Levasseur’s pickup truck at a gas station in Danforth. The trooper, acting on a state probation revocation order, immediately recognized the vehicle and moved to apprehend Levasseur. It didn’t take long for the situation to escalate.
According to court records, the trooper ordered Levasseur to the ground and quickly secured him. A sheathed knife was discovered on Levasseur’s belt, raising immediate red flags. When questioned about other weapons, Levasseur admitted to having a firearm inside the truck. A search of the vehicle revealed a .458-caliber rifle, carelessly wrapped in a blanket in the backseat. The rifle wasn’t just present; it was loaded – two rounds in the magazine and one chambered, ready to fire.
This wasn’t a first offense. Levasseur is legally barred from possessing firearms due to a lengthy rap sheet, including three prior state convictions for – you guessed it – illegal possession of a firearm. The system failed to keep this man from re-offending, and now the public pays the price. The question remains: how many chances does this guy get?
The investigation was a joint effort between the Maine State Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). They did their job, bringing Levasseur to justice, but the revolving door of the criminal justice system continues to spin. The feds secured the conviction, but will this sentence be enough to deter Levasseur from future crimes? Only time will tell.
