Chicago Man Sentenced for Crack Cocaine Trafficking

A 26-year-old Chicago man has been sentenced to 140 months in federal prison for his role in a crack cocaine trafficking operation in Southern Illinois.

Maurice L. Christian, also known as ‘Reece,’ was sentenced on a federal crack cocaine violation in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois. Christian, who had previously pled guilty to a one-count indictment, was found responsible for 493 grams of crack cocaine.

The offense occurred between 2013 and March 2014, in Jackson County, where Christian and his associates were transporting crack cocaine from northern Illinois to Carbondale for distribution. On multiple occasions, Christian sold crack cocaine to a confidential source working for law enforcement.

Christian’s sentence was enhanced because he possessed a firearm during his participation in the crack cocaine offense. His co-defendant, Johnathan T. Buck, also known as ‘Buffalo,’ was previously sentenced to 120 months for his role in the crack cocaine conspiracy.

The ongoing investigation is being conducted by the Southern Illinois Enforcement Group, Carbondale Police Department, and Drug Enforcement Administration. The Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office assisted in the investigation.

Assistant United States Attorney Amanda A. Robertson prosecuted the case, which involved a complex web of crack cocaine distribution in Southern Illinois. Christian’s sentence serves as a reminder of the severity of the penalties for those involved in drug trafficking operations.

Christian will serve 3 years of supervised release following his prison sentence and was fined $200.00. The case is a significant blow to the organized crime groups involved in crack cocaine trafficking in Southern Illinois, and law enforcement agencies will continue to work together to dismantle these operations.
