Chicago Robber Gets 10 Years for Multi-State Heists

Christopher Taylor, 25, of Chicago, will spend the next ten years in a federal prison cell after being sentenced for a string of brazen robberies targeting electronics stores in Illinois and Indiana. Taylor and his crew didn’t just steal; they used violence, intimidation, and firearms to terrorize employees and security, leaving a trail of fear and property damage across state lines.

The robberies weren’t isolated incidents. Federal prosecutors detailed how Taylor, along with multiple co-conspirators, hit multiple Simply Mac stores and at least one Best Buy. In one particularly chaotic incident at a Best Buy, the crew attempted to snatch laptops before crashing into several vehicles during their escape. At a Simply Mac in Cherry Valley, Illinois, Taylor and eight others stormed the store, pepper-sprayed an employee, and made off with computers. Taylor didn’t stop there, physically assaulting an employee returning to the store and stealing their cell phone.

The most lucrative hit occurred at a Simply Mac in Valparaiso, Indiana. Armed with a handgun, Taylor’s crew disarmed a security guard and bound employees and the guard with zip ties. They ransacked the store, escaping with approximately $69,500 worth of merchandise – laptops, iPads, smart watches, and phones. It wasn’t a sophisticated operation, but it was brutally effective, relying on fear and quick action to overwhelm store staff.

Taylor eventually pleaded guilty to robbery and attempted robbery charges, a move that expedited the legal process and spared potential victims and witnesses the ordeal of a full trial. While the plea allowed Taylor to avoid a potentially longer sentence, it didn’t erase the harm caused. The feds, led by Acting U.S. Attorney Morris Pasqual and FBI Special Agent-in-Charge Robert W. “Wes” Wheeler, Jr., pushed for a substantial sentence to send a message.

U.S. District Judge Philip G. Reinhard delivered that message, handing down the ten-year sentence during a hearing in Rockford, Illinois. The sentence isn’t just about punishing Taylor; it’s a warning to others contemplating similar crimes. Retail theft is a growing problem, and federal prosecutors are increasingly focused on prosecuting these cases as organized criminal activity, not just petty shoplifting.

The investigation remains open as authorities continue to track down and prosecute Taylor’s co-conspirators. While Taylor is behind bars, the feds aren’t finished dismantling the entire operation. Sources inside the FBI’s Chicago Field Office tell Grimy Times that the crew was likely involved in reselling the stolen merchandise on the black market, further fueling criminal enterprises. Expect more arrests in the coming weeks as the investigation unfolds.
