A 60-year-old Pinellas County man is behind bars and facing federal charges for possessing a stash of child sexual abuse material, federal authorities announced.
Calvin Roy Dutton, of St. Petersburg, was arrested on May 31, 2024, after investigators discovered a hard drive containing over 1,000 images of child abuse material during a routine repair job at an Illinois company.
According to court documents, Dutton had mailed the hard drive to the company for repairs and an employee stumbled upon the disturbing content while attempting to recover data. The employee promptly contacted law enforcement, and a search warrant was executed at Dutton’s home.
When questioned by authorities, Dutton admitted to owning the hard drive and copying files from his laptop to it.
A complaint is merely a formal charge that a defendant has committed one or more violations of federal criminal law, and every defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
This case is part of the Department of Justice’s nationwide initiative, Project Safe Childhood, aimed at combating the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
The case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations and the St. Petersburg Police Department, with Assistant United States Attorney Ross Roberts set to prosecute.
Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims.
