SEATTLE — Thomas Joseph Barrett, a former employee of the Social Security Office of Disability Adjudication and Review, has been sentenced to five years in prison for receipt of child pornography.
The sentence was announced by U.S. Attorney Jenny A. Durkan following Barrett’s guilty plea earlier this year. The 50-year-old Lynnwood resident was arrested at work in January 2013 after investigators discovered his illicit activities on both his workplace computer and personal device.
“The SSA-OIG acted swiftly to protect our system from any potential compromise, ensuring the integrity of our operations,” said an SSA official.
The investigation revealed that Barrett had accessed child pornography using both his work and home computers. His internet history also indicated a disturbing pattern of researching legal consequences for possessing child porn. According to the Social Security Administration, no network or data were compromised during this incident.
Search warrants executed at Barrett’s residence and place of employment yielded over 3,500 images of child pornography. The case was jointly investigated by the SSA-OIG, Homeland Security Investigation, and the Washington State Patrol.
Special Assistant United States Attorney Seth Wilkinson and Assistant United States Attorney Marci Ellsworth prosecuted the case, with Mr. Wilkinson, an attorney with the Social Security Administration, designated to handle federal criminal cases.
