COLUMBUS, OH – A cold-blooded robbery at a local internet café turned deadly on January 20, 2019, claiming the lives of Joseph and Karen Arrington. This week, two of the men responsible finally faced justice, but the sentences handed down barely scratch the surface of the senseless violence. Chris A. King, 28, the shooter, received a staggering 480 months – 40 years – in federal prison. Justice B. Stringer, 29, who acted as the getaway driver, will spend 360 months, or 30 years, behind bars.
The Arringtons were simply working at Players Paradise on East Broad Street when King stormed in, gun drawn, alongside an accomplice. The pair robbed the establishment at gunpoint, then brutally murdered security guard Joseph Arrington and his wife, Karen, an employee. Stringer waited outside, idling the engine, ready to whisk the killers away from the scene. It wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision; this was a calculated, predatory act of violence fueled by greed.
This wasn’t an isolated incident. Court documents reveal a pattern of brazen robberies targeting internet gaming businesses. A federal grand jury indicted five individuals in July 2019, linking them to a string of heists. Prior to the Arrington murders, Stringer and his cohorts robbed the same Players Paradise location on December 10, 2018, making off with $30,000 in cash. Stringer also confessed to involvement in a January 7, 2019, robbery at Planet Jackpot café on Alum Creek Drive, further cementing their criminal enterprise.
The investigation, a collaborative effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the Columbus Police Department, painstakingly pieced together the evidence, linking each defendant to the escalating crimes. The sentencing was announced jointly by U.S. Attorney Kenneth L. Parker for the Southern District of Ohio, FBI Special Agent in Charge J. William Rivers, Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant, and ATF Special Agent in Charge Daryl S. McCormick. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kevin W. Kelley and Elizabeth A. Geraghty successfully prosecuted the case.
While the 40- and 30-year sentences offer a measure of closure for the Arrington family and the Columbus community, they are a stark reminder of the escalating violence plaguing our cities. The ease with which these men acquired firearms and targeted vulnerable businesses demands a closer look at the flow of illegal weapons and the lack of security in these establishments. The remaining three defendants involved in the conspiracy still await sentencing, and Grimy Times will continue to follow their cases.
Judge Michael H. Watson delivered the sentences in U.S. District Court, acknowledging the severity of the crimes and the lasting impact on the victims’ families. But justice, in this case, feels hollow. Decades in prison won’t bring back Joseph and Karen Arrington, two people whose lives were tragically cut short by a band of ruthless criminals motivated by nothing more than a quick buck. The ripple effects of this violence will be felt for generations.
