Austin Store Owner Survives Gunfire in Brazen Robbery
Austin, Texas – In a shocking display of violence, two convenience stores in Austin were robbed at gunpoint in the span of two months, leaving one owner shaken but alive. The suspect behind the brazen heists has been identified as Christian Lopez-Burgos, a 25-year-old Honduran national.
According to court documents, Lopez-Burgos allegedly committed the first armed robbery on Dec. 31, 2023, and the second on Feb. 3, 2024. During the first robbery, he brandished a firearm, while during the second, he fired a pistol at a victim three times and pointed it at two others.
The charges against Lopez-Burgos are severe, with two counts of Hobbs Act robbery, one count of brandishing a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, and one count of discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison for each Hobbs Act violation, a minimum of seven years in prison for the brandishing charge, and a minimum of 10 years in prison for the discharge offense.
U.S. Attorney Jaime Esparza of the Western District of Texas announced the indictment, citing the bravery of the store owners who narrowly escaped harm. The FBI, Austin Police Department, San Marcos Police Department, and Houston Police Department are investigating the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Gabriel Cohen prosecuting the charges.
Lopez-Burgos’s indictment is merely an allegation, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of community vigilance and swift law enforcement action in preventing and responding to violent crimes.
As the investigation continues, authorities urge anyone with information about the case to come forward. The community is left shaken but determined to rebuild and move forward, with a renewed focus on public safety and crime prevention.
The indictment highlights the need for effective law enforcement strategies and community engagement to combat violent crime. As the case unfolds, Grimy Times will provide updates and insights into the investigation and its outcome.
