Christiana Ogbonnaya, False Government Records, Texas 2024

HOUSTON, Texas – Christiana Ogbonnaya, a former nurse at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Houston, has been charged with creating false government records, a crime that could put her behind bars for up to five years and result in a $250,000 fine, according to a recently unsealed indictment.

The indictment alleges that Ogbonnaya, a 54-year-old Richmond resident, made false entries in the VA’s Computerized Patient Record System while on duty at the Houston VA Medical Center from July 26-27, 2024. According to the charges, she claimed to have observed a male patient on several occasions during her shift, but in reality, she had no contact with him at those times.

Medical personnel found the patient unresponsive in the early morning hours of July 27 and ultimately pronounced him deceased, according to the charges. Ogbonnaya’s actions are considered a serious breach of trust, as she was acting in her official capacity as a nurse at the time.

U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei announced the indictment, which was returned on May 7. The investigation was conducted by the VA Office of Inspector General, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Kelly Zenón-Matos is prosecuting the case.

An indictment is a formal accusation of criminal conduct, not evidence. A defendant is presumed innocent unless convicted through due process of law.

The charges against Ogbonnaya highlight the importance of accountability in the healthcare industry, where patients rely on medical professionals to provide accurate and reliable care.
