Bank Robber Strikes Again: Christopher E. McCarthy Indicted for Three Heists
A brazen bank robber has been caught in the act, and now faces justice for his crimes. Christopher E. McCarthy, 29, of Ontario, Ohio, has been indicted for three bank robberies in Richland County.
The string of robberies took place over the course of a week, with McCarthy targeting three different banks. On April 26, he robbed the Richland Bank in Mansfield. Just a week later, on May 3, he struck again, this time at the Farmers and Savings Bank in Loudonville. And on May 4, he robbed the Farmers National Bank in Wooster.
The investigation into McCarthy’s crimes was a joint effort, involving the FBI-Mansfield Resident Office, the Mansfield Police Dept., the Loudonville Police Dept., the Wooster Police Dept., the Ohio BCI, the Millersburg Police Dept., the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office, and the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force for Richland County.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jason M. Katz, who will present the government’s case against McCarthy. An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt, but it marks a significant step forward in the pursuit of justice for the victims of these crimes.
The sentence for McCarthy, if convicted, will be determined by the court after a review of factors unique to this case, including his prior criminal record, his role in the offense, and the characteristics of the violations. In all cases, the sentence will not exceed the statutory maximum, and in most cases, it will be less than the maximum.
An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. McCarthy will have the opportunity to defend himself against these charges and prove his innocence.
The people of Ohio can rest a little easier knowing that justice is being served, and those responsible for these heinous crimes will be held accountable. We will continue to follow this case and bring you updates as more information becomes available.
