Bashir Mohamed, Conspiracy to Defraud Food Stamp and Women, Infants and Children Programs, Ohio 2023

Four Ohio men have been slapped with a massive food stamp fraud charge for their alleged involvement in a scheme that funneled nearly $670,000 through Bashir Market on Detroit Avenue.

The accused, Bashir Mohamed (31), Yusuf Maalin (45), Ali Shire Ahmed (54), and Farah Hasan Warsame (27), are charged with conspiracy to defraud both the food stamp and Women, Infants and Children programs.

According to the indictment, the quartet conspired to allow customers to redeem their benefits for cash or ineligible items at Bashir Market. Mohamed, Maalin, and Warsame were said to be workers at the market who redeemed the benefits in question.

The ledger kept at the market tracked credit towards overseas wire transfers, with Mohamed and Maalin allegedly providing Ahmed with cash or checks for overseas transfers to Columbus. The funds were then wired abroad.

Prosecutors claim that the conspiracy spanned from 2008 until last year, with Ahmed taking the money to Columbus for transfer. If convicted, the defendants face sentences determined by the court based on factors such as their roles in the offense and prior criminal records.

The investigation was a joint effort between the United States Department of Agriculture, FBI, and Department of Homeland Security, with Assistant United States Attorneys Matthew W. Shepherd and M. Kendra Klump handling the case.
