Dashawn Elder, a 21-year-old Cleveland man, was hit with a five-count federal indictment after being caught with carfentanil, fentanyl, cocaine, and a firearm during a November arrest. The charges, announced by U.S. Attorney Carole S. Rendon and DEA Special Agent in Charge Timothy Plancon, allege Elder possessed the deadly drugs with intent to distribute—a charge that carries steep federal penalties.
Elder was taken into custody on November 28, when authorities discovered the narcotics during a search tied to an ongoing investigation. Court documents confirm the stash included not only carfentanil—a synthetic opioid 10,000 times stronger than morphine—but also fentanyl, cocaine, and a loaded firearm, raising the stakes in what prosecutors are calling a clear public safety threat.
The indictment, handed down by a federal grand jury in the Northern District of Ohio, underscores the federal government’s aggressive stance on synthetic opioids fueling the overdose crisis. Carfentanil, often used to tranquilize elephants, has increasingly turned up in street drugs, contributing to spikes in fatal overdoses across the Midwest, including Cleveland.
If convicted, Elder faces a sentence determined by the court after weighing factors such as his criminal history, role in the offense, and the nature of the charges. While federal law sets a maximum penalty for such crimes, actual sentences often vary and may be lower, though still severe under current drug trafficking statutes.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew J. Cronin is leading the prosecution following a probe conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration. The case exemplifies the DEA’s intensified efforts to dismantle supply chains of synthetic opioids before they reach users on city streets.
An indictment is not a conviction. Elder is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, where the government must prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt. A trial date has not yet been set.
