Edward G. Kramer, the director of Cleveland’s Housing Advocates, Inc., has been sentenced to a year in prison and ordered to pay over $237,000 in restitution for tax violations.
In a stunning revelation from the United States Attorney’s office for the Northern District of Ohio, Kramer pleaded guilty to 10 counts of criminal information, including not paying over withheld taxes to the government and evading his personal income tax obligations.
The 62-year-old Kramer was also found guilty of falsifying his income tax returns for two years and failing to file returns in two others. His actions resulted in him attempting to avoid paying taxes on approximately $500,000 between 2007 and 2010.
In his role at Housing Advocates, Inc., which received federal funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Kramer was responsible for collecting and paying over quarterly income and FICA taxes. However, he willfully failed to do so, accumulating nearly $80,000 in unpaid taxes.
Steven M. Dettelbach, the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “Today’s sentence is a reminder that we all have an obligation to truthfully report our income and pay taxes.”
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Justin J. Roberts following investigations by both the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigations and the Department of Housing and Urban Development – Office of Inspector General.
