A Perryton Independent School District (ISD) coach has been hit with serious charges after being accused of engaging in a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old student, announced U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas, Leigha Simonton.
Cole Underwood, 29, was formally charged with enticement of a minor following an investigation sparked by Perryton ISD’s superintendent on May 7. The complaint claims that surveillance footage shows Underwood meeting with the girl alone after hours, in direct violation of school directives.
Law enforcement agents discovered that approximately 15 minutes after propping an exterior door open and turning off lights, the girl entered the building and went to Underwood’s office. Interviews revealed that the child alleged having sex with Underwood more than a dozen times between February and May. Underwood reportedly used Snapchat to arrange these encounters.
The girl’s cell phone contained evidence of late-night conversations lasting over six hours, where Underwood allegedly called her “wifey” and professed his love for her. A complaint is an accusation, not proof; Underwood is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Underwood faces life imprisonment if convicted. The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Dallas Field Office – Amarillo Resident Agency and the Ochiltree County Sheriff’s Office, with full cooperation from the Perryton Independent School District. Assistant U.S. Attorney Callie Woolam is handling the prosecution.
Underwood’s case highlights the critical need for vigilance in educational environments and the severe consequences when trust is betrayed.
