Codey Bonnette, a 26-year-old from Morgantown, West Virginia, was sentenced today to 41 months in federal prison for distributing oxycodone in Monongalia County. The guilty verdict, handed down in federal court, marks the end of a years-long investigation into illicit opioid sales tied to one of West Virginia’s hardest-hit regions.
Bonnette pleaded guilty in October 2017 to one count of Distribution of Oxycodone, admitting he sold the powerful prescription painkiller in September 2015. The transaction took place in Monongalia County, a jurisdiction that has become a focal point in the state’s battle against opioid abuse and illegal drug networks.
United States Attorney Bill Powell confirmed the sentencing, underscoring the ongoing federal crackdown on drug traffickers fueling the addiction crisis. “This case is not an isolated incident,” Powell stated. “Every conviction chips away at the networks poisoning our communities.”
The investigation was led by the Mon Metro Drug and Violent Crimes Task Force, a HIDTA-funded initiative designed to disrupt high-impact criminal activity. The Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force Program (OCDETF) provided critical financial and logistical support, enabling coordination between federal and local law enforcement.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Zelda E. Wesley prosecuted the case, building a timeline of Bonnette’s admitted drug sale through evidence and testimony. The prosecution emphasized the dangers of prescription opioid diversion, particularly in a state where overdose rates remain among the highest in the nation.
Sentencing was presided over by Senior U.S. District Judge Irene M. Keeley, who handed down the 41-month prison term. Bonnette will also face a supervised release period following incarceration, as federal authorities continue to target both street-level dealers and larger drug trafficking organizations across West Virginia.
