A Colchester man has been caught up in a machinegun trafficking scheme, and his guilt was recently acknowledged in a court of law. MICHAEL SHERIDAN, 27, of Colchester, pleaded guilty to illegal possession of a machinegun.
Possession of a machinegun carries a maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years. According to court documents and statements made in court, Sheriden agreed with an associate who had manufactured a machinegun to deliver it to another individual who had purchased it. On January 29, 2021, Sheriden transferred the machinegun to the purchaser in a parking lot in Cromwell.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Margaret Donovan is handling the prosecution of this case. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with the assistance of the Penobscot County (Maine) Sheriff’s Office, investigated this matter.
The court proceeding, which took place via videoconference due to the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act), was presided over by U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert A. Richardson.
U.S. District Judge Vanessa L. Bryant is scheduled to sentence Sheriden on November 10, 2021.
Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), the centerpiece of the government’s violent crime reduction efforts, is also involved in this case. PSN is an evidence-based program proven to be effective at reducing violent crime.
This case is part of the broader strategy to identify and address the most pressing violent crime problems in the community, and it highlights the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the community in preventing crime.
