A 30-year-old cold case involving the kidnapping and murder of 7-year-old Morgan Violi has been solved with the guilty plea of Robert Scott Froberg. On July 24, 1996, Froberg kidnapped and murdered Violi in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The crime went unsolved for three decades despite tireless efforts by law enforcement. Froberg, 61, from Dayton, Ohio, was finally caught and agreed to a life sentence.
Froberg had a history of crimes, including an armed robbery arrest in Alabama in 1988 and two escapes from custody in 1996. He also attempted to lure a 7-year-old boy into a treehouse in Pennsylvania before his final escape. On July 23, 1996, Froberg stole a maroon Chevrolet van, which he used to drive to Bowling Green, where he committed the tragic crime.
The breakthrough in the case came with advancements in DNA processing, including the creation of the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS). Additional laboratory testing led to Froberg’s arrest and conviction. The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Kyle G. Bumgarner, Special Agent in Charge Olivia Olson of the FBI, and other law enforcement officials.
The case highlights the importance of perseverance and advancements in technology in solving cold cases. Morgan Violi’s family can finally find some closure after 30 years of waiting for justice.
