Coleman Sentenced 84 Months for Gun Possession

• SOUTH BEND – A Michigan City man has been sentenced to 84 months in prison for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, announced Acting United States Attorney Tina L. Nommay. Davon Jaqurious Coleman, 21, of Michigan City, Indiana, was sentenced by United States District Court Judge Cristal C. Brisco after pleading guilty to the charge. Coleman was prohibited from possessing the firearm due to prior felony convictions for robbery.

According to documents in the case, police conducted a traffic stop in Michigan City and found Coleman in possession of a stolen loaded firearm with an extended magazine. The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives with assistance from the Michigan City Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Lydia T. Lucius.

Coleman’s sentence includes 84 months in prison followed by 3 years of supervised release. This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities. PSN brings together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to make neighborhoods safer for everyone. The program is based on core principles of fostering trust and legitimacy, supporting community-based organizations, setting focused enforcement priorities, and measuring results.

The Department of Justice launched a violent crime reduction strategy in 2021, strengthening PSN based on these core principles. The strategy aims to address the root causes of violence and work with communities to prevent it from occurring in the first place. By bringing together law enforcement and community organizations, PSN aims to create safer neighborhoods and reduce violent crime. Coleman’s case is a prime example of the consequences of violating these laws and the importance of PSN in reducing gun violence.

Coleman’s prior felony convictions for robbery made him a prohibited person from possessing a firearm. The fact that he was found with a stolen loaded firearm with an extended magazine only exacerbated the situation. Coleman’s sentence should serve as a warning to others who would consider violating these laws. The Department of Justice will continue to work tirelessly to reduce violent crime and gun violence in our communities.

This case highlights the importance of community partnerships in reducing crime. By working together with law enforcement and community organizations, we can create safer neighborhoods and reduce the occurrence of violent crime. Coleman’s case is a reminder that the consequences of violating these laws are severe and that the Department of Justice will continue to prosecute those who break them.
